JENINE MARSH
ROOM AND BOARD
NOVEMBER 1 - DECEMBER 3, 2012
OPENING RECEPTION: THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 6-9PM
Evans Contemporary is pleased to present new works by Jenine Marsh for its inaugural exhibition. Marsh maintains an ongoing practice based in sculpture and installation where found objects and commonplace materials provide a familiar and local sculptural vocabulary for provisional assemblages and simple constructions. Reflecting a studio practice based in experimentation as opposed to production, Marsh's works provide evidence for a sometimes quietly humorous, sometimes deadpan process of constructing an experiential philosophy of objects and space.
Marsh attempts to subtly create the conditions for de-instrumentalization and role-change in the viewer/thing relationship, where objects do not merely take up space. Instead, space is populated and animated by objects, allowing everyday interactions to become the potential for an engaged deployment of agency. Through her work, the individual's essential role as participant is elevated, not above materials and objects, but to an equal playing field. The object here, however, is not resented as an equal stand-in for the self. It instead may be a monstrous other, upsetting the medium of sculpture as the conductive medium through which an animistically animated space can arrive.
Jenine Marsh was born in Calgary AB, where she received a BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design. Her work has been shown in numerous arts venues throughout Canada and include exhibitions at Truck Gallery (Calgary, AB), The Other Gallery (Banff AB), Ed Video (Guelph, ON), Stride Gallery (Calgary AB), and Struts Gallery (Sackville, NB). Marsh has been awarded grants from the University of Guelph, The Canada Council for the Arts, and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. She has twice served as artist in residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts (2009, 2010). Other residencies include the Vermont Studio Centre (2011), Alberta Foundation for the Arts (2011) and artist in residency at Struts Gallery in Sackville NB (2010). Marsh is currently a MFA candidate at the University of Guelph.
